SciAps LIBS Analyzer Models

We offers four differents hardware platforms with our handheld LIBS analyzers.

From sophisticated analysis of ultra-low elemental concentrations in alloys, ores, brines and powders, to basic material or scrap sorting, we offers a specific model for your application.

Quick Model Guide

Model Spectrometer Range (nm) Elements Measurable Applications
Z-901 200 – 440 Common elements for most applications including light elements Be, B. Excludes C, Li, Na, Air-burn and argon purge for alloy analysis, mining and environmental, general analytical studies.
Z-901 CSi 190 – 240 C and Si Dedicated to measuring C, Si in steels, stainless and (future) Ni alloys.
Z-902 Carbon 190 – 440 Elemental range of the Z-901 plus carbon. Targets carbon measurements in alloys, plus other alloy bases. Includes a high resolution spectrometer  measurement of carbon in alloys including L-grade stainless.
Z-902 + 190 – 625 Analysis of the Z-901 but extends spectral range to include Li, Na and C.  Carbon is for non-alloy applications. Extends analytical range to include Li in alloys, ores and brines, non-alloy measurement of C, and Na.  Not for carbon in steels, stainless or other alloys.
Z-903 190 – 950 Above plus H, N, O, Cl, F, Br, Ce, Rb and S. Mostly for geochem, researchers, academic institutions, forensics or specific analytical applications.  Measures emissions of every element through transuranics.

Uniquely SciAps Product Features

Spectrometer

The Z-900 Series uses a patented stack-spectrometer design that delivers wide wavelength range and high resolution – superior to any other handheld LIBS. Depending on your application, the 900 Series can be purchased with 1-3 spectrometers.  The 3-spectrometer Z-903 range is 190 nm – 950 nm. In addition to the elements measured by the Z-902, this wider wavelength range also measures: H, F, Br, Cl, N, O, S, Rb, Cs and K.

Camera/Video

The SciAps Z-900 Series offers dual cameras.  A wide-area lens “macro-camera” provides for photo-documentation of samples tested and can read bar codes or QR codes for sample identification.  The internal camera allows pinpoint viewing and aiming of the laser for sample analysis. The internal  camera augments the power of LIBS analysis. The laser is automatically focused to < 100 µm beam size, without requiring any external, intensity-killing collimation commonly found with XRF. The Z’s camera can be used to precisely strike many types of samples. Welds can be analyzed in multiple locations when examining weld chemistry changes across the weld. The Z’s camera can hone-in on particular regions for non-homogenous samples. Images are automatically saved with results for photo-documentation. And, the Android platform enables sharing of the data and high resolution images when collaborating with colleagues or reporting results.

Laser

The key to good LIBS analysis is creating a good plasma. The best plasma’s come from the highest power densities on the sample. The Z’s PULSAR laser technology fires laser pulses in the 5-6 mJ/pulse range, at up to 50 Hz frequencies, with 1 ns wide pulses. It is well established that mJoule, rather than micro-joule laser pulses yield superior analytical results.

Data Sharing & Connectivity

The Z is built on Google’s Android Platform and offers compatibility and connectivity to smartphones, tablets and other devices via the Android SHARE feature.  It’s also available with Cloud-based data sharing, data merging between multiple instrument platforms, and report generation.  It avoids the tedious process of downloading and importing data – including the Android SHARE feature. The powerful processor offers Wireless, Bluetooth communications and is GPS enabled.

No Fragile X-Ray Detectors

Unlike XRF analyzers, there’s no sensitive detector element near the front window. The Z uses a virtually impenetrable “tough as Pyrex” quartz window. Because LIBZ collects light in the visible and ultraviolet spectral region, rather than x-ray region, a durable, thick window may be used so long as it’s transparent to visible and UV light. Light traverses this quartz window, then into a well-protected spectrometer. You will not be able to break this detector window!

Auto Calibration

The Z monitors time and internal temperature, and automatically institutes a calibration as needed. This means no cal-check samples to carry around (and lose or get dirty). Reduces the likelihood of operator error by automating the calibration procedure.

Battery

The newly designed Z uses much less power, and lasts 6+ hours on a single, lightweight battery. Plug in the AC adapter to recharge and power the analyzer. External battery charger and spare battery included

X-ray and laser together in “One Box”

The SciAps X and Z make the perfect complement for elemental analysis. The X analyzes transition and heavy metals with great precision, and is ideal for bulk sample types like alloys, soils, liquids, powders. The Z is ideal for low atomic number elements like Li, Be, B, C, Na, F even down to hydrogen. And the Z, with it’s integrated targeting camera and 100 um beam spot, is better suited for micro-analysis. The One-Box delivers optimal analysis across all elements and sample types, for bulk analysis or micro-analysis.

The X and Z also operate on the same battery, use the same charger and other accessories.

SciAps Z – Top 10 Advantages

The ONLY LIBS that offers Dual-Burn Operation

The Z features on-board argon purge for high precision analysis. Users may also run the Z in air-burn if your testing requires less precision or you have restrictions on gas canisters. 50 years of spark optical emission have proven the analytical superiority of argon purge!

Protect your Confidential Materials Chemistry

The Z includes desktop/tablet software allowing a user (password protected) to modify calibrations, elements analyzed, grade IDs and various spectral pre-processing. Customers can keep their proprietary materials proprietary!

Lightest, Fastest LIBS Analyzer

The latest Z is the lightest, fastest high performance LIBS analyzer. Perfectly balanced, you can test fatigue-free all day long. Wrist strap also included. Results shown in 1 second, full test time 3 sec.

No Grinding, except for Carbon

The Z uses a 50 Hz laser, firing 10 surface cleaning shots in 0.2 seconds to burn away surface contaminants, dirt, etc. The Z is the only LIBS unit proven to analyze even the dirtiest scrap without grinding.

Beam Rastering

The Z rasters the laser to 6 different positions and automatically averages the results. Why do this? Because LIBS lasers are typically 50 um in diameter, and testing a single location may not average out inhomogeneities even in vacuum melt alloys. Also if the laser happens to hit an inclusion or embedded contaminant, an outlying result will be averaged out over the rastering. 50 years of LIBS scientific literature tell you that rastering is a “must have.”

Free Software Upgrades

Software upgrades free for the life of the analyzer.

Customer Flexibility

Do you have specific UI or SW requests? Tell us about them. Most requests are requested by multiple customers, and we’ll always do our best to include them in a future software update.

On-board Camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS

Photo-document samples, and/or aim laser at specific area on sample if needed. WiFi/BT make for easy data transfer and connectivity. USB connections also included.

Vibrant Display

Brightest, largest display, easiest to read in direct sunlight.

Service Costs

Generally the lowest in the industry. Why?  Products are designed for rough use and low lifetime service costs. SciAps makes theirs own lasers and spectrometers, so we can repair items on a component-level.
